In this episode we look at how you can get what you want in a way that allows you the most freedom to enjoy time outside of work.

How many hours are you working each month to put a roof over your head? Many people talk about the idea of being house poor, of having a house, or a home, or an apartment, or a condo, or whatever it might be, that is so expensive that there's hardly any time to enjoy life. People talk about owning a house that's too big for them, and yet the truth is, let's be clear here, they're not really owning it. The bank is usually owning it, but they're investing so much money to maintain this house that they don't have time to enjoy life outside the house or even time inside the house. I remember when I was just out of college and started working, the first time I moved out of the house and got my own apartment. After a few months, I was dissatisfied because I was hardly spending any time in the apartment. I just took my stuff from my parents' house and I moved it to this apartment because I wanted my freedom and I was hardly ever at the apartment because I was outside in the world enjoying life at the beach, hanging out with friends.

I realized I really didn't need a two bedroom apartment. A one bedroom apartment was plenty. Sure, the extra room was nice and saying I had an extra room was nice, but I really just wanted to be outside more or even in my house, having time to enjoy things with people. I encourage you to look at your expenses and how much it costs you. Let's say you own a house or you and the bank own a house and consider how much does the mortgage cost, plus the property taxes, the utilities, the insurance, the homeowners' association fees, all those different things, and look at that and consider how many dollars does that cost you after tax, and then how many hours does it take you to make that after tax income? Let's say you make $50 an hour after taxes and your home is costing you $2,000 per month, well, 40 hours times $50 is $2,000. So that might cost you 40 hours. Now, if you make $25 an hour, well now that's costing you twice as much time. That's costing you 80 hours. That's a lot more. So a lot of this is about just considering how important is it to have this just awesome house that might be on MTV Cribs or something, compared with or balanced with having the time to enjoy it.

I've seen so many people do what I did at one point where I was putting so many things in my house and yet I was working hard to get the things and I didn't have as much time to spend with my friends to hang out. I had all these cool things in my house but nobody was coming over because I was too busy working to keep my social life going. I encourage you to just look at that and consider what is it you really most want from your home or your house or your apartment or whatever it might be. What are you looking to get from it? See how you can get that in a way that allows you the most freedom to enjoy time outside of work, being able to enjoy other life experiences as well. I hope you find this helpful.
